The book has been compiled with a view to the easy identification of most the the trees and larger shrubs of these islands. The text, which has been made as full as possible in a volume of this size, is excellently supplemented by the illustrations, chosen to show at a glance the general character of the form and foliage of each tree/5(10). Disappointingly few pages actually relating to the trees. It is as described - a Note Book. When had been searching for the old Observers Books this is a little misleading in it's title, and while I was not expecting lots of trees, it did look as if would give some tree information, or at least more than the 4 or so pages it does have/5(5). A book of more than one hundred tree varieties, it has many wonderful colour and monochrome illustrations and photographs including bark, leaf and twig identification tips. Compiled by the author of their Wild Flowers book; W.J. Stokoe, it is a comprehensive pocket sized guide to the trees and larger shrubs found in the British Isles. A wonderfully elegant pocket-sized book, richly illustrated, containing information on the trees one might practically encounter on a country walk. I say 'practically' because this book deals for the most part in trees commonly found, and not the diversity of rarer species also in existence, though some of the rarer types are indeed nicely catalogued/5(14).
